Photorejuvenation, or Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatment, is a nonsurgical procedure offered by Dr. Jaime Campos-Leon at his clinic.

How does IPL work?

IPL treatments can improve the evenness of skin tone over the course of three to five treatments, performed three to six weeks apart. The unevenness of skin tone is caused by different concentrations of melanin, the biological dark pigment, within the skin. IPL treatment requires a specialized laser device, which emits quick flashes of light energy to target melanin as well as the red blood cells in the capillaries of the skin. The heat from the laser device breaks down the melanin or damages the cells of the vessel walls and achieves a more uniform skin tone.

What happens to the melanin in the skin?

Once targeted by the heat energy from the laser, the damaged particles of the blood vessels and melanin pigment then pass through the body’s lymphatic system and are then naturally processed and recycled throughout the body.

The skin will be slightly sensitive immediately after the procedure and requires minimal aftercare. In some cases, spots of pigment may rise to the skin’s surface and become scabs, which can be sloughed away painlessly. There is typically no down time or loss of function for patients, and most people experience no side effects other than minor redness following the procedure.
